Bobbin Lace or "Mundillo"

Recently, I got interested in one of the oldest type of art existing today, "bobbin lace" or in Spanish "mundillo". From our great grandparents times, bobbin lace was pretty popular among upscale and high class families. This was a way of making money for some families as well. This art was brought to Puerto Rico from Spain, but there are some that claim that the Muslins and Italians were big into this unique and elaborate art. Queen Isabel "La Catolica", personally worked this art in gold and silver threads and gave it to the churches in Spain. In Puerto Rico, this art is not completely forgotten thanks to artisans in the Island.

Production of bobbin lace is very limited, so in the hopes of increasing interest in this art, I have decided to write a post. Here are a couple of tutorials that give you an idea on how to work this intricate art. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL5EZqc6peY where Eneida Marrero has given a few minutes of her time to teach the beginnings of bobbin lace.

I have included a picture of a tool used in the production of lace, to give you an idea of what to look for when working with bobbin lace. Also, you can contact the Museum of Lace in Moca, PR, www.museodelmundillo.org for tools, bobbins and other information.
